Report of SMS Missionary Anna Shaets
Gomel, Belarus – May, 2009
Praise the Lord for opportunities to serve patients in the oncological ward. At the present time, because of the financial crisis, repairs to the hospital are not being done. I visit patients and serve the elderly and those who have had recent surgeries.
This month, I visited the hospital every day to minister in a ward where there are five patients. One of them was a member of the church. I tried to carry out requests: I purchased groceries and medicines for them and served them in their personal needs. One of the women, who has a very small pension, needed help to take care of her invalid son. She was obviously exhausted, and I paid special attention to her needs.
Another woman, who was declared an invalid due to her loss of sight. The third person can move about only in a homemade wheelchair. After taking care of their physical needs and requests, I am able to speak to them about God’s love, mercy and grace. Questions were asked: “Who is satan?” “How does God look at the issue of war, and why does he allow it?” “Do people believe in the soul?” “Why do the priests sin?” One woman said, “It is frightening for me to read the New Testament because it condemns me. I will read when I am at home. I want to take more spiritual literature.” We agreed to meet together later.
I rejoice that there are those with a desire to read spiritual literature, and I pray for the positive influence which God alone can bring about.
Lydia, a young girl, for whom surgery was not recommended, will be having only chemotherapy. She also took some books to read. I gave her the gift of a New Testament.
I shop for Valentina, who has been unresponsive and will not speak. But with the treat of some tasty foods, she began to smile. I think that her timidity is associated with trauma. I looked after Irina, who was very weak after surgery, and needed assistance.
Please pray for me in my work and also for the patients and for spiritual strength for this work. I thank you all, brothers and sisters for your financial help. Sincere greetings to Ludmilla and Peter Pleshko.
