This proclamation is performed by messengers called of God for this task of evangelization. When the proclamation is accepted by individuals, the messengers must continue educating and equipping believers through exhortation and edification. Therefore, as local church congregations are established, church planting also is included in this goal of SMS.
The church’s two activities are specifically revealed in the Scriptures: Gathering and Going. Both should complement one another. The Great Commission of Jesus Christ entails the task of making disciples through evangelism and exhortation. What had been the work of Jesus Christ while in the world is now the work of His disciples. “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21).
Salvation, of course, is the first step in a person’s relationship with Jesus. Repentance of sin and renewal of life are necessary to begin the experience of union with Christ.
Next follows baptism and sanctification. Only those individuals who have become disciples are eligible to be baptized. Disciples are set apart (sanctified) to serve the Savior. To “teach” someone means to disciple that individual into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ - “to observe everything that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). Teaching is an essential, unceasing task of the mission of the church. The Holy Spirit’s aid is always available to the individual who is faithful to the Lord’s Commission.
Finally, the dedicated disciple has the call of serviceability each and every day given by God through the power and participation of the Holy Spirit. Every believer who is part of the body of Christ has an ability, gift or talent that can be utilized by God to further the advancement of the Good News of salvation.
God’s strategy for world evangelism calls for two equally important elements: Co-missionaries and Go-missionaries, the senders and the sent, the supporters and the workers. A Christian church without missionary enthusiasm is a contradiction. God depends upon the faithful testimony of His people for the evangelization of the world. The Savior expects those who have tasted the sweetness of salvation to spread the news far and wide. He has commissioned His children to share His Word to the lost in every country. |
