Slavic Missionary Service has been ministering in the Slavic world since 1933. Much assistance has been given to the Slavic people, especially when the Soviet Union disbanded in 1991-1992. National missionaries are being supported, and many churches have been built because of the generous contributions of Christians in the United States.
Because of the warring conflict between Russia and Ukraine, many of the outreaches of the missionaries of SMS have been disrupted. But new outreaches have appeared, especially among the Ukrainian refugees that have fled the areas where the battle is raging. SMS is grateful that God has providentially placed their national workers in Western Ukraine and other places to minister to these refugees.
Since the beginning of the war, SMS has been able to provide funds to assist the workers to meet the needs of the refugees. The main vehicle that has been delivering humanitarian aid to the most devastated areas is twenty-eight years old. This large van has been effective in traveling to these devastated areas, but it has been experiencing malfunctions the last few weeks. Because of these break downs, the need for a “new” used van is urgent. The total cost of an affordable vehicle is approximately $20,000. Slavic Missionary Service has started to raise funds and approximately half of these funds have been received.
Matching funds raised by SMS has been the policy for almost all projects overseas. But SMS understands that during this time, it is very difficult for the churches in Ukraine to raise extra funds. (After the war concludes, this vehicle will be utilized by the First Baptist Church in Borislav, Ukraine for various ministries.)
