The English as a Second Language (ESL) classes have been completed in the cities of Minsk and Gomel, Belarus. The students have received their certificates for participating in this condensed program of Conversational English. In Minsk over 700 people attended the classes, and in Gomel around 500 people participated in the program. The classes are designed for students who have a very limited knowledge of the English language, as well as those students who possess advanced skills.
When possible, the teachers accept invitations to visit with their students in homes, cafes and even excursions in the parks. These relaxed times provide opportunities for the teachers to share more personal information about their lives, especially concerning their Christian faith. Of course, the students also are able to share about their lives more freely.
The volunteer staff of teachers was truly amazed at the progress of many of the students. After completing this course, some of the students showed interest in continuing their studies of Conversational English by enrolling in a One-year English course in the fall. Also, some students were more inquisitive about Christianity and the Christian faith.
Consider volunteering your time next year for this wonderful opportunity to interact with the people of Belarus. Helping others speak in a second language, as well as building international relationships, will be both refreshing and rewarding!
