God is so much greater than His creation – man. His ways are not like our ways. His thoughts are not like our thoughts. His plan for mankind has always been one of fellowship.
When the Soviet Union chose to disband and discontinue the rule of communism, evangelical leaders requested that their church buildings be returned to their rightful owners. Churches that were confiscated and converted into museums and warehouses during the days of communism or that just lay dormant once again became places of worship.
Opportunities to secure new property were granted and new churches began to be constructed. Many times, the authorities released territory to the Christian community, which they deemed unsuitable for commerce or apartment structures. And the property usually was located on the outskirts of the city.
One such location was situated in the city of Khimki, a suburb of Moscow, Russia. The property purchased by a group of Christians was near a channel flowing from the Moscow River and surrounded by forest. An old house destroyed by fire stood on the premises. Very little development was seen in this area.
The Christians were delighted that they could construct a church in their city. Slavic Missionary Service joined this band of believers in raising funds to complete this daunting task. Soon, the building was finished and worship services were conducted.
Within a few years, other construction started in this section of Khimki. Apartment buildings seemed to rise overnight. A business complex was erected adjacent to the church. Now, a hotel is being built on the other side of the church.
Clearly, God knew that a church was necessary in the heart of this future expansion. This past summer, eleven new converts were baptized and welcomed into the membership of the Evangelical Christian Baptist Church in Khimki. Many of them live in the nearby apartments that were recently constructed.
SMS is amazed at the awesome wisdom of our God and is appreciative of the support that was given to accomplish this great work. Pray for the leadership of the church that they may continue to obey the Great Commission and show their community that following Christ is the best choice for this life and the life to come.
